It’s almost impossible to move around on the train. Families arrange themselves any way they can. But there’s room to laugh, tell stories, play cards, talk about football or just think. The groups split as they cross Serbia. Some prefer to walk directly to the border, despite the threat of thieves. The most cautious take to open fields. In this remote region, it’s now the Serbian police that blocks their way. There’s more waiting and permits to reach Hungary, the yearned-for door to the European Community.
